Self Care as a Busy Professional
I have always been somewhat of a work-a-holic, I find it incredibly hard to switch off but thats because I love what I do. However, I have been asked on numerous occasions how it doesn't all catch up on me and thats because I think I might have got the balance just right for what I need. I know just how much I can take on and still take moments to step back and reassess. It's all about self-care. Something that everybody talks about nowadays, you only need to scroll for ten seconds on twitter, or flick through a magazine or blog to see it.
However, I won't lie to you. Getting the balance right is hard. When you're spending so long trying to build a portfolio, go to work, build a business, you can get to bed and feel absolutely exhausted. So, getting in two hours of meditation before bed is virtually impossible. But there are so many easy ways to happier and healthier which in turn should make work life easier and more enjoyable.
Don’t underestimate the value of 15 minutes
I definitely don't get much free time during the day, or in the evening, for that matter. My usual day consists of a 5am start, straight to work, a busy radio show, make sure the usual daily things have been done like cooking, cleaning, making time for family then I get home and do more laptop work including this blog. Everyday I could easily feel like I just want to climb into bed, and stay there forever (we’ve all been there)! However, if you have any time to spare, even 15 minutes, don’t underestimate how good this will be for your mental wellbeing.I usually like to try and go for a walk on my lunch break, zone out on the train, or if the day hasn't even had a spare moment, I love to get myself a hot chocolate before bed, put on a TV show and relax. Self-care doesn’t have to be complex.
I definitely live by this one - maybe a little too much! But everyone need to treat themselves sometimes. I always think I'm working hard so why not buy that thing I have always wanted? It doesn't even need to be something lavish. I love pizza and have always wanted a pizza stone to make my own so why not treat myself. Or maybe you’ve been eyeing up that makeup palette for way too long. Sometimes, you’ve got to reward yourself for all of the hard work that you’ve been doing, and I'm totally about taking yourself out on a spa day during the weekend. Maybe, you don't want to spend a lot of money as your saving up, a simple bubble bath, huge chocolate bar or get out an old film you've not seen for ages or maybe all three at the same time is a great treat!
Put sleep first
I have to tell myself this one all the time. As I said earlier, my new wake up time is 5am which in theory means I should be in bed by 8pm but no. On a regular occasion its hitting 11pm before I put my laptop away, turn the work brain off and even start thinking of sleep. I know its wrong and we all need to make sure that we’re not working right up until we go to sleep. I didn't realise this until recently but it makes your sleep quality a lot lower, and mental health can suffer.
